A teacher taught her class the importance of washing your hands with a class experiment.
The experiment consisted of a few slices of bread and a class full of grubby hands. The results were both interesting and completely disgusting. The lesson, though? The only way to keep germs away is by washing your hands.
Teacher, Jaralee Metcalf, decided she’d combat the spreading of germs by doing a science project with her class. They would test the effects of touching sliced bread with different subjects.
Their conditions were clear.
“We did a science project in class this last month as flu season was starting. We took fresh bread and touched it. We did one slice untouched. One with unwashed hands. One with hand sanitizer. One with washed hands with warm water and soap. Then we decided to rub a piece on all our classroom Chromebooks.” – Jaralee Metcalf
The results spoke for themselves
While we all know our hands can harbour some pretty grotty germs, the images of the slices of bread and downright horrific.
While the control slice remained pristine and white, the only other slice that retained its beauty was the slice touched with hands cleaned with soap and water.
The slice exposed to hand sanitiser didn’t fair well, with a yellow and black formation of mould forming.
As you’d expect, the slices touched by dirty hands and chrome books are completely beyond repair.
Having reached the conclusion she no-doubt had sought after, Jaralee ended her experiment with with one message.
“As somebody who is sick and tired of being sick and tired of being sick and tired. Wash your hands! Remind your kids to wash their hands! And hand sanitizer is not an alternative to washing hands!! At all!”
