Ahh it’s that time of the year again… 1st April… When the clocks go backwards, your phone all of a sudden is set in a different language, the radio is playing alien sounds and everyone just seems to be a tad chirpier. It’s April Fool’s of course! Over the years it’s become a bit of a competition on which companies will create the most outrageous campaign, causing havoc amongst multiple social media platforms. From Virgin Australia claiming they created a “Kid’s Class” dedicated aircraft cabin for children only, to ING offering home loans of up to $20,000 to pet owners in order to create a dream property for their pets. Each year it gets better and better and the race is on for who will come up with the greatest prank and have the highest social media engagement.
Let’s take a look at some of our 2021 favourites!
Subway came out a little early this year and told their customers that a delicious new Coriander Cookie was coming on the menu… almost as controversial as whether pineapple belongs on pizza! Safe to say many were absolutely disgusted by the product – they sure knew how to ruffle up some feathers.
A new take on being COVID safe and eating clean, Nando’s came out with finger gloves so you can devour those extra spicy chicken tenders without worrying about the residue all over your fingertips! Practical? Probably not. Hygienic? Absolutely!
3. Boost Juice
One of the absolute favourite items on the Boost Juice menu is of course, the Mango Magic, so what a way to create an uproar than to tell everyone it’s no longer available? Comments instantly flooded in about “boycotting Boost” and how devastated young children will be – definitely a successful prank in our eyes!
4. Volley x Bunnings Warehouse
Now this is one that had a positive response… the one and only Bunnings shoe! What better way to tell the world how much you love the store than to wear it on your feet, all day, every day! All we know is, if it’s not a Buy 1 Get 1 Snag Free then we’re not happy!
5. Mad Mex
How great is heading out for a meal after a long day of work and getting food delivered to you on a silver platter? Not anymore! Mad Mex introduces their self-service system, Make Your Own Mad Mex, for the utmost convenience. We must say they’ve put a lot of trust in their customers, and outstanding work on the editing!
You either realllllly love Vegemite, or realllllly hate it – there’s no in between – but one thing’s for sure, even if you like to smear a bit over your toast, there’s no way you’d want to drink it. But, nevertheless, they came out with a new Vegemite-flavoured Dare to really stir up the pot…and it did!
Dominos came out with a new product… a masterpiece… wait for it… Bread! Plain old bread that you could buy from the supermarket, but hey – if you can order a pizza and a loaf of fresh bread at the same time, some could say you’re killing two birds with one stone!
8. Pizza Hut
Garlic bread sure is delicious, but would you eat it in a bottle? Pizza Hut put it out there and the response had mixed emotions. Some said it’s essentially the exact same as eating garlic bread, whilst others said they’d rather the flavour of garlic on their bread not in a dip. What do you say?
9. Total Tools
This one was totally believable and definitely got a lot of people’s hopes up! Total Tools came out with a new Makita 40V XGT Sandwich Press, so you can cook up a feast when you’re on site. Many people actually forgot about the date and were ready to place an order!
Ikea has pretty much everything you could possibly need and today they released their Hund Couture range. What do you think? Would you buy some branded Ikea merch for your much-loved pooch?
Everyone loves the deliciousness of Chobani yoghurt… but would you put it on your face? Introducing their newest skincare range, Chobani made many people’s day this morning with their new brightening, anti-aging and hydrating face masks. Many comments expressed how sad they were to realise it was merely an old April Fool’s prank.
12. LEGOLAND Discovery Centre
Paying homage to the Victorian Premier, LEGOLAND announced a life-size LEGO replica of Daniel Andrews to be put inside their Miniland centre in Melbourne. Again, this announcement – full of hilarious puns – had mixed emotions. Thankfully, many people saw the humorous side and said whilst the idea would be great, it’s probably not feasible in a Miniland centre.
13. SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium
Would you ever dine underwater? SEA LIFE fooled their customers into thinking they could dine in the 2.2 million litre Oceanarium for an experience like no other. Can’t say we’d ever dare to try this, and many comments discussed the absolute anxiety that would occur, but what would you do?
14. Krispy Kreme
Everyone loves delicious original glazed donuts, but would you love the flavour spread across your loaf of bread? Krispy Kreme came out with their iconic flavour in a spread so you can sit down in front of the TV and indulge without the calories of a doughnut (but probably just as many)!
Are you tired of running around to restock Weet-Bix over and over? Today they fooled their customers into believing they are launching an 120kg value pack so you can satisfy those hungry bellies whatever time of day. Safe to say many parents were saddened to realise this was all a prank.
