It’s one of those facts of life that most of us never really bothered to question: backpacks just come with a diamond patch on them. End of story.
It turns out though, that the diamond patch on your backpack is a super handy tool that many have under-utilised.
After a mum raised the question in a Kmart Facebook Group, many users chimed in to answer the question we all were suddenly desperately asking. It turns out many others were scratching their heads over that darned diamond patch.
It now seems that the diamond patch on backpacks is the nifty little add-on we never knew we needed.
With over 500 comments offering answers, a few of our favourites included:

In fact, the diamond patch has a name and an actual use!
“The slotted patch… is called a “lash tab” or “pig snout,” and is made to hold… spare gear on cords”
“For hikers and backpackers, that might mean hanging extra items that you reach for often like a flashlight or canteen, and for employees toting a backpack to the office, it might mean stringing headphones or electronic chargers through the slot for easy access” – RD.com
And in case you were wondering just how vital diamond patches are, it turns out people are adding them to their backpacks! We kind of feel like there will be a surge in appreciation for diamond patches, or lash tabs, on backpacks. And it all started with an innocent Facebook post!
If you’re looking for more creative ways people are using basic everyday items, don’t look past the Kmart pool noodle. A mum has found a way to ensure private time in the bedroom is just that – private (and quiet!).
