We all know that demanding kids never take up smoking is far from cool. So when this Aussie grandmother created the Non-Smoking Challenge for her grandchildren, we couldn’t help but applaud her.
Aussie grandmother, Judy Kerrison, decided that instead of preaching about the health implications of smoking, she might have more luck appealing to her grandkids’ hip pocket. Thus was born the #NonSmokingChallenge.
Judy seized the moment, when one of her grandchildren noticed how much cigarettes really cost.
Grandchild commented on how much cigarettes are, after watching someone purchase them… So we made a challenge… smoking [versus] eating challenge” – Judy Kerrison
The Launceston grandma and her grandchildren bought groceries to the equivalent value as a packet of cigarettes, with a 10-cent difference between the 2 dockets.
“Grandkids and I tried to purchase the most value for money, “basic” food items and the most popular cigarette brand … they were surprised at the amount of food you can buy for the same monetary value”
While a packet of cigarette’s was a whopping $56.95, the quantity of groceries bought for the same amount was unreal. Judy and her grandchildren were able to buy a huge assortment of groceries for 10-cents less than that single packet. Their groceries totaled $56.85 and included meals ad snacks for at least 3 days!
“Included breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks… must say I hope this exercise has made them aware of life’s choices … and not to take up this habit”
