With American TV shows flowing freely in most Aussie homes, it’s easy to forget that our kids may be consuming information that is useless here in Australia. Especially in emergency situations. If only there was a 000 song!
That’s why musicians/ husband-and-wife team, Jo and Dave Tweedie have written the 000 Song – for our Aussie kids all about when and how to call 000.
The couple have been writing songs together since 2013, a collaboration that has come natural to them with their duo forming the band TOTUM.
“Bouncing ideas around together makes it even more fun and sometimes it takes a song to places we didn’t expect it to go,” says Jo.
Their music is often varied, taking on tones of country, folk or something they can’t quite put a name to!
Noticing something was missing
When their eldest son was 2, Jo and Dave found themselves singing songs about dialed emergency services. Unfortunately, the songs all referred to England’s emergency number (999) and America’s equivalent (911).
“They were both on YouTube and very catchy and we tried searching for an Australian one with no luck. So we decided well.. let’s write an Aussie one!”
When Jo sat down at the piano, the entire song came together straight away. The chords, lyrics and melody flowed within half an hour.
“When I write, that tends to happen. The music and the vocals always inspire each other. I recorded it on my phone so I wouldn’t forget it. You can hear our youngest who was 10 months old at the time, letting me know I had been playing piano for too long!”
The song was released in 2020, despite Jo and Dave writing it back in 2018. Hey, we get it! Life gets busy with young kids! Dave produced it and is the vocalist in the YouTube video.
“When we played it for the kids, they loved it so much that we decided to record them singing along in the bridge. They absolutely loved the experience and when we put it together with the animation they watched it on repeat countless times” – Jo.
Have a listen yourselves and get this catchy tune ringing in your kids ears! And you just might find yourself singing along too!
