I could tell you about the stunning visual experience of Disney on Ice.
The incredible depiction of breathtaking coral that Dory and Nemo dart around. The costumes that have been crafted so perfectly to bring our favourite Disney characters to life.
I could even tell you about the undeniable talent of those artists on skates. Their flawless movements, as they glide across the icy floor. Their ability to take us on a journey with them dancing circles around and around.
Heck, I could even tell you about the magical lighting effects that turned the whole arena into Disney’s stage. The textures and colours projected on every surface made Rod Laver arena a canvas for the masterpiece of Disney on Ice.
But I won’t.
Disney on ice has always been and always will be a event all kids need to experience. It will always create memories beyond any joy we could imagine from a performance, immersing even those that try to resist. The magic simply pulls you in and there is no escape once you’ve succumbed to it.
What you need to know, though, is that Disney on Ice did so much more than celebrate Mickey Mouse this year.
You see, Disney on ice is a massive celebration of women.
Princess after princess after princess
The first Act saw many familiar Disney faces from a few of our favourite movies, including Toy Story, Inside Out and Finding Dory – all brought to you by Mickey and the gang. The most notable part of this Act though, was in the array of all the princesses.
From Belle to Ariel. Rapunzel to Jasmine. Tiana to Snow White. The power girls just kept coming!
Despite having their lover-boys by their sides, the girls stole the show. All eyes were on them, with their beau’s sitting on the sidelines. The princesses were far from damsels in distress and had every girl in the arena in awe of their every move.
With Rapunzel and Ariel flying through the air, their performances were the uplifting sing-along we all need every once in a while.
Then came the girls that really kick butt
The girl power kept coming in Act 2 with Frozen and Moana. Watching girls overcome their challenges, doing it on their own and not needing a man – now those are the kinds of heroes we all need.
The beautiful sisterly love between Anna and Elsa came together so beautifully. The notion that girls need saving was swept away and replaced by a reminder that girls actually need to boost each other up.
To say I got goosebumps watching Elsa skate around, singing ‘Let it Go’ and bringing her ice castle to life – well, that still doesn’t do it justice.
The moment we had all been waiting for finally came in the last installment of Act 2 – Moana’s debut to Disney on Ice. Boy, oh boy, I just LOVE Moana.
Moana’s epiphany that the call of the ocean is within her was brought to life so perfectly. Watching her glide across the ice as she finds a hero within herself is the warming message we all need.
A celebration of women is a celebration for all
Despite the masses of women, teenage girls and kids that flooded Rod Laver Arena, Disney on Ice is a show for all.
Celebrating strong female heroes is crucial. Disney reminds us of the importance of boosting our women up, showing women that don’t let anything get in their way.
Uncontrollable ice, shooting from your palms? You’ll sort it out, Elsa. Uncooperative Demigod? You can manage on your own, girl.
Disney is no stranger to promoting gender-inclusive ideals. Only a few months ago, Disney Parks celebrated International Women’s Day at their various locations around the world.
These celebrations are:
“part of [Disney’s] efforts to put a culture of inclusion at the heart of [their] workplace” – Catherine Powell, President, Disney Parks Western Region
Watch Disney on Ice
Instead of suggesting you load the whole family in the car and head over to a Disney on Ice show, I urge you to go.
Your kids will have an amazing time – that’s a given. You’ll enjoy yourself, too – but you probably already knew that.
What I didn’t expect to realise from attending the 2019 show though, is that every single one of us – any age, any gender – needs to see the Disney girls kick butt.
