A baby had an anaphylactic reaction during a fun craft activity at daycare, due to the paint containing milk – an ingredient that baby Lofton is highly allergic to.
Despite being aware of Lofton’s milk allergy, his parents and the staff at daycare were unaware that craft paint could have affected him. Lofton had an anaphylactic reaction to the paint, even though it only touched his skin.
Parents Christen and Matthew have shared their story in the hopes that they can help others with similar allergies. Being unaware of the ingredients in paint caused a seemingly harmless activity to be a terrifying encounter.
“We have known Lofton has had a milk allergy from the time he was born, but never would we have thought a fun painting craft at daycare would turn into the scariest day of our lives.”
It turns out that a lot of craft paints contain egg and milk – a fact many people aren’t aware of. So, when Lofton’s daycare began a craft activity where the kids were making footprints out of paint, things began to head south.
“when it was applied to Lofton’s feet to make foot prints it was absorbed and caused an anaphylactic reaction.”
Reaction time is key
Luckily, the daycare staff acted fast. This resulted in Lofton eventually making a full recovery.
“Thanks to the quick response… Lofton was ok.”
Christen and Matthew have since met with Lofton’s allergist and have put strict guidelines in place to ensure Lofton avoid’s a repeat of this event.
“He is now to avoid anything that has dairy in all forms.”
“I hate that this happen to our baby but we are able to share our story and let people know to be so careful with crafts if your child has any type of allergy”
“We are now the kid with the Epi pen but wouldn’t have it any other way, knowing it will save his life if something like this were to ever happen again”
